Hackney City Farm, is providing six one and half day courses in eco building and bicycle maintenance skills. It is open to refugees, asylum seekers and unemployed people .

Courses 2008
Day 1 – 20 June- Welcome, introductions, tour of farm
- Slide show - our community no-compromise eco build
- Health and safety
- Straw bale demonstration and practice – complete potting shed
Students will be familiar with the farm, the nature of the course, and will have begun to understand the health and safety considerations of working with tools and some materials.
They will have a broad but basic knowledge of different types of eco building materials and a basic knowledge and practice of building with straw.
Day 2 – 25 June
Students will have an understanding of the challenges of working with reclaimed wood and increased knowledge of the environmental benefits. They will have made contacts in the local area for future projects.
Day 3 – 2 July
- Work on potting shed – roof, windows and doors or floor. This will be determined by what is left to do and what available materials we have.
Students will have gained practical knowledge of working with reclaimed wood and improved team work skills.
Day 4 – 9 July
- Visit to Society Protection Ancient Buildings TBC
Students will have learnt about the uses of lime in ancient buildings and the different types of lime used in the UK.
Day 5 – 16 July
- Lime render mixing and applying
Students will be familiar with the health and safety considerations of working with lime. They will have practical knowledge of mix and applying lime as a render onto straw bale walls.
Day 6 – 18 July
- Clay render mixing and applying
Students will be familiar with the health and safety consideration of working with clay. They will have basic knowledge of clay types and uses. Students will have gained practical knowledge of how to mix and apply clay as a render.
